Charleston Internal Medicine integrates Greenway’s PrimeSuite with OTech Kiosks
Terry Coleman, Administrator at Charleston Internal Medicine (CIM), has witnessed the positive impacts of OTech’s patient self check‐in kiosk system and is an advocate for its use.
Coleman worked with OTech in a previous position where they had installed four patient self check‐in kiosks. So, when he took his current position at CIM, Coleman and CIM’s physicians where interested in implementing the kiosks. One problem ‐ the practice management system they used, Greenway, did not offer integrating with a kiosk as an option. Coleman called OTech and asked if we’d be willing to integrate with Greenway. Of course! Lo and behold, CIM became the first office in the country to implement the kiosk on the Greenway platform. They went live in April 2008 and have had positive results since day one!
According to Coleman, “Patients love the kiosk. We have heard from other practices that they are hesitant to get a kiosk because most of their population is geriatric. For us, we think this is the perfect population to use a kiosk. They rarely move, their insurance never changes and they always pay their bills in a timely manner. For them, checking in is quick and simple!”
For those who do not pay in a timely manner, CIM really likes the collection option which does not allow a patient to check‐in without settling their debt. They also like the auto collection of the co‐pay right at the kiosk. Another feature of the kiosk that CIM uses is posting office messages to communicate about new providers or new tests and services they’re offering.
Not only does the OTech patient self check‐in kiosk save dollars and cents, but for CIM itwas about service and managing building limitations. For example, Coleman explains how “when we got the kiosk we had three providers in the office and one receptionist. Now, we are at seven providers and space prohibits us from being able to add another check‐in window so the kiosk has to absorb that large increase in patient volume. I still only have one receptionist and there is never a back up at the front window because of the large volume of patients that check‐in with the kiosk. It is efficient, user friendly and fits well into the flow of our office.”
